In his essay „Die Lust an der Zeichnung“ (“The Pleasure of Drawing,”) Jean-Luc Nancy compares drawing to the flight of an arrow, where the tension of the bow mirrors the tension in the drawer’s body, thoughts, and feelings. The drawn line, much like the arrow’s discharge, embodies both intention and spontaneity, revealing the dynamic interplay between artist and medium.
Equivalently, the three artists here confidently test the ballistic possibilities in the flight of their arrows: beginnings, ends and confusion of possible narratives. By doing so, they trust the art, knowing more than the archer, and allowing the medium that wants to be read and described to speak independently.
Bannat, Brovira and Skupin met at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg, where all three were trained at different but overlapping times in the 1980s and 1990s, although work continues, and the artist is never fully done.
